Rockingham Strategic Centre Revitalisation

The vision for the Strategic Regional Centre is to achieve a traditional city centre character with street life, safe pedestrian spaces and ready access to a vibrant mix of commercial, civic, community and recreational activities.

The RKDO has assisted the City of Rockingham and Department for Planning and Infrastructure in completing the first stage of a major review of planning to guide the development of the Rockingham Strategic Regional Centre.

The study area includes more than 600 hectares of land stretching from the Rockingham Railway Station, City Centre, Murdoch University, Dixon Road sporting fields through to the Rockingham beachfront, including the Waterfront Village.

The proposals set out a bold vision for the future development of the Rockingham City Centre.  Stage 1 of the study includes an overall concept plan and draft framework with a preferred access and movement network.

The centre plan will accommodate a sophisticated coastal activity centre serving a projected population of about 275,000 in the Rockingham Kwinana region.  This is more than double the current population.

Current status

The draft Rockingham Strategic Regional Centre – Centre Plan – Stage 1 Report (September 2007) was on public exhibition during November and December 2007.

Following the exhibition period and consideration of submissions the City of Rockingham adopted the Stage 1 Report in February 2008.

The consultant team has now commenced with Stage 2 of the review, which includes detailed planning work on the framework plan, precinct policies and guidelines and preparation of an implementation strategy.  On completion of the Stage 2 study tasks later in 2008, public consultation will occur on the Stage 2 findings.
